The Reds supporters have come under sharp criticism from Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson for their wild Premier League winning celebrations. Liverpool FC fans have been celebrating in a rampant manner ever since Chelsea FC’s victory over Manchester City FC guaranteed the Premier League title for their side.
Celebrations were always going to be wild and unstoppable at Liverpool FC winning the Premier League. The title was been awaited by the Reds faithful for 30 years, with the last one coming in 1990. Moreover, the supporters won’t be able to see their side lift the trophy from the stands due to all remaining Premier League games to be held behind closed-doors.
However, Joe Anderson has voiced his concerns over the huge numbers of people gathering in public places by stating that the safety of fans was in danger due to the looming coronavirus spread. There have been restrictions imposed in the United Kingdom over the mass gatherings of people in public places.
The Liverpool mayor has conveyed his fear of the spread of the pandemic virus if the Reds supporters ceased to stop their wild public celebrations. Anderson expressed his thoughts on the matter, saying that the COVID-19 virus was still a danger to society and the city of Liverpool had already lost many lives due to it.
Anderson also expressed his dismay at the fact that there have been reports of people getting drunk and urinating on the streets of the city. The city mayor warned that a curfew could be imposed shortly to curb the effects of the escalating situation.
According to Anderson, the previously held Black Lives Matter protests in the city were far more peaceful when compared to Liverpool FC fans celebrating their side’s title-winning campaign. The current situation has seen some Reds supporters going of their way to create a ruckus.
Jurgen Klopp also had emphasized on the Liverpool FC fans celebrating in an orderly fashion. The German had urged the Reds supporters to celebrate their side’s victory from their own houses.
