Jurgen Klopp has played down the seriousness of Liverpool FC striker Roberto Firmino’s recent goal drought. In what is truly a shocking stat, the Brazilian has not scored even once at Anfield this season in the Premier League. All eight of Firmino’s Premier League goals in the current campaign, have come on the road.
The 28-year old Firmino has attracted plenty of criticism in recent months following his inability to score goals for his side. Although the Brazilian international is played as a false nine in the Liverpool FC starting lineup, Firmino does much of the side’s defensive work by tracking back regularly.
However, despite his great performance against Burnley on Saturday afternoon, the Reds’ number nine could not get on the scoresheet once again. Firmino’s effort on goal in the second-half hit the post, preventing the 28-year old from scoring his first Anfield goal this season in the Premier League.
Firmino did score once at Anfield this season, however, the goal came against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League. The forward had headed the ball past Jan Oblak, only to see his side lose their one-goal lead and go on to suffer a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Spanish side.
Klopp, however, has defended Firmino in the face of criticism directed towards the 28-year old striker. The Liverpool FC boss voiced his praise for his player’s “outstanding” performance against the Clarets at Anfield on Saturday.
According to the Reds coach, it is not important who scores for Liverpool FC as long as they manage to secure a victory in the game. Klopp added that Firmino’s job was to link-up the Reds’ style of play and that was performed exceptionally well by the Brazilian.
The 28-year old Firmino had scored 12 times for his side in the 2018-19 Premier League campaign. With three games still to play, the attacker would be hoping to match his tally from last season.
