Liverpool FC consider 21-year old Weston McKennie as Thiago alternative

FC Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie has been linked with a move to Liverpool FC this summer. The American international has emerged as one of the biggest talents in the Bundesliga. McKennie’s performances for Schalke this season has attracted interest in the 21-year old from many top clubs.

The Reds are being considered a strong suitor to land McKennie’s signature in the current transfer window. It is believed that Liverpool FC are on the hunt for a new midfield option to add to their squad.  Thiago Alcantara has been the major source of interest from the Reds; however, a deal has not been able to be finalized due to Bayern’s asking price for the Spaniard.

The 21-year old McKennie has voiced his desire of playing in the Premier League. The American international could be headed to England this summer if Schalke plans to sell their star player. McKennie had stated that it was his future goal to play in the English top-flight division.

Moreover, the youngster had expressed hope of joining a club that competes in the Champions League. The Reds are in a favorable position to sign McKennie this summer as they look to strengthen their squad with the hope of defending their Premier League crown next season.

The current manager of Schalke, David Wagner is a very close friend of the Reds boss, Jurgen Klopp. The Liverpool FC coach could use his connections to sort out a deal for McKennie if interest in signing the 21-year old midfielder intensifies in the coming time.

Thiago’s transfer approach continues to drag on due to pricing concerns over signing the Spanish international. Bayern Munich are sticking to their valuation of £31 million for the 29-year old midfielder. However, the Reds are unwilling to meet the said asking price, with Thiago’s current contract with the Bundesliga champions set to expire next season.

Reports suggest that McKennie’s transfer would cost Liverpool FC a sum nearing £20 million. Such a price-tag for the 21-year old is not hefty, considering the player is yet to peak. Moreover, with Adam Lallana set to leave the club, McKennie could be a great squad-rotation option the Reds.
