Manchester United great Wayne Rooney has backed Liverpool FC to defend their Premier League crown should Jurgen Klopp’s side be successful in signing Thiago Alcantara ahead of next season. Rooney believes the Reds to be the main contenders to secure Premier League glory next season alongside Manchester City.
Despite Chelsea being a major player in this summer’s transfer window with the signings of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and Ben Chilwell, the ex-England skipper does feel as if Frank Lampard’s side are quite ready to challenge Liverpool FC and Manchester City for the league title in the upcoming 2020-21 season of English top-flight football.
‘Chelsea are making a lot of signings, some good signings.
‘I think Chelsea with the new signings will possibly need a year to get everyone on the same song-sheet.
However, the Anfield giants’ approach for the 29-year old Thiago has been given a huge thumbs up by Rooney, a familiar foe for the Reds supporters during the player’s days at Everton and Manchester United.
The Derby County ace expressed Thiago’s potential arrival at the Merseyside club to overwhelm Manchester City’s possible capture of wantaway star Lionel Messi. The Argentine forward is believed to be favoring a move to the Etihad Stadium this summer after handing in a transfer request at FC Barcelona.
‘So I do think it is between City and Liverpool. And I think if Liverpool get Thiago from Bayern Munich, I think it [the title] is done.
‘I think that’s a better signing than Messi going to Man City.’
