Jurgen Klopp not worried by lack of defensive depth following key player’s exit

The lack of center-back options at Liverpool FC following Dejan Lovren’s departure is not a major concern, expressed the Merseyside club boss Jurgen Klopp in a recent interview.

The Croatian international joined Zenit this summer after falling down the pecking order at the Reds last season. However, following the player’s exit, Klopp was one quality option short at center-back in his senior squad.

A number of central defenders playing across Europe’s top five leagues have been linked with a move to Anfield ahead of the 2020-21 campaign for the Premier League champions, namely Real Betis star Aissa Mandi and Sevilla ace Diego Carlos.

But so far, no concrete approach for either of the defenders has been made by Liverpool FC, reports confirm. Klopp, when asked about his alternatives to take Lovren’s place in the squad, pointed out the youngsters available at his disposal next season.

Reds’ potential stars Sepp van den Berg and Ki-Jana Hoever, along with returning loanee Nathan Philips were prospective options to become first-team regulars, according to the German coach.

“The situation is obvious, we have a lot of centre-backs, pretty much all of them apart from the three we had last year are all pretty young, which is good.

“A lot of space for development and they all did well; Sepp did well, Ki-Jana prefers right-back but did well, Billy did really well considering his age especially, and Nat Phillips came back from Stuttgart full of confidence.
