Andy Robertson admitted in his post-match remarks that Aston Villa gave a tough fight to Liverpool in the Anfield showdown on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men ran out narrow victors over Steven Gerrard’s Midlanders courtesy of a second half penalty from star forward Mohamed Salah who helped break an hour-long deadlock between the two sides.
Liverpool were far more dominant on the pitch but had the Villa backline led by shot-stopper Emi Martinez playing spoilsport to the chances in the final third for the home side.
The Merseysiders survived a couple of scares on the defensive front but had the centre-back duo Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip stand tall to keep the Aston Villa frontline in check over the course of the 90 minutes.
Speaking to the club’s official website in the aftermath of yet another win for his side, star defender Robertson said the result was one to cherish despite the 1-0 scoreline with the visitors to Anfield putting up a tough contest.
“We had to dig deep [in the] last 15 minutes. Once we got the goal they kind of took the ‘nothing to lose’ [attitude], they started being a bit more adventurous, they started pushing their full-backs forward, they started causing us a few problems.
“But that’s when as defenders we have to stand up and we have to make ourselves counted when the front boys have already scored, and I thought we did it excellently.
“I thought Joel and Virg won every header that came their way, I thought me and Trent defended well, Fab was covering the spaces really well, Hendo, Millie when he came on, Thiago, and of course the wingers and striker were defending really well. One-nil, a really good result. Clean sheet, which we’re delighted about. It could have been a couple more goals, of course it could, but look, it’s all about picking up three points, especially at this period of the season.”
