Andy Robertson says he is willing to play at centre-back if required

Liverpool FC’s highly-rated left-back Andy Robertson is willing to play in a rather unusual centre-back for his side role if the current state of an injury-depleted defensive line at Anfield requires him to do so, according to the player’s recent interview to the club’s official website, Liverpoolfc.com.

A long-term layoff for both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk, coupled with a minor sideline for Fabinho due to a hamstring blow, has meant that Klopp does not have a number of experienced names to call upon in the central defender role, with Joel Matip being the only first-team option currently in full fitness ahead of Leicester City’s visit to Anfield on Sunday.

Despite younger options in Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips very much in line to feature for the Reds as centre-backs, Klopp could find himself in a position of drafting Robertson at the heart of the Liverpool FC backline, and the Scot is ready to do the same, in spite of never having turned out in that position ever before for the Champions of England.

“I don’t think I’ve done it before but if the manager thinks that’s an option, then I’ll play it and do it to the best of my ability,” said the Scotland international.

“Whatever the manager asks of me, I’ll do it. Look, if that becomes an option or that becomes the case, I’ll do it to the best of my ability and I’ll try my best, like I do in any other position.

“The centre-backs have been hit hard – Joey and Virg long-term injuries, which is devastating, and Fab on his way back and things like that. We’ve still got options there. If I’m one of them, so be it. ”

“All the lads here, we can all adapt to different positions and do our best in those positions.

Robertson’s recent comments would surely be an encouraging sign for Jurgen Klopp’s side amidst an injury hailstorm to key first-team regulars seemingly attempting to put Liverpool FC’s title-defence campaign on an abrupt hold.
