Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi reportedly on Liverpool’s radar

An injury-ridden Liverpool FC are eyeing a surprise swoop for Arsenal centre-back Shkodran Mustafi as the deadline-day of the January transfer window looms large for the Merseysiders.

Reports from Football365 claim that the German international defender is seen as a short-term cover for the injury-depleted backline of Jurgen Klopp’s side, which further lost Joel Matip to an ankle issue following the recent win over Tottenham Hotspurs.

With the first-choice centre-back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez heavily tipped to miss the remainder of the top-flight campaign, Klopp has been put under pressure from the club’s fanbase on adding fresh blood to the senior squad ranks at Anfield.

Mustafi’s current deal with Mikel Arteta’s North London outfit comes to an end in less than six months after which the German would be allowed to leave on a free transfer but Liverpool FC’s ongoing injury crisis could force the Premier League holders on extending an offer to Arsenal before the window comes to a close.

There are suggestions that the Gunners could be tempted to terminatete Mustafi’s contract following which Klopp’s side can sign the 28-year-old on a short-term deal.
