AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell expected to take over from the outgoing Julian Ward

AS Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell is expected to take over from the outgoing Julian Ward at the end of the season, according to a report from The Liverpool Echo.

Ward is set to leave the Premier League giants just a year into succeeding Michael Edwards last May and the former’s exit came as a surprise to many, including the Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp who was notified of the decision following his side’s 3-1 win over Southampton in November.

The soon-to-be-vacant role of sporting director at Anfield could be filled by Mitchell who was pursued by Liverpool’s domestic rivals Chelsea before the west Londoners brought in Christopher Vivell on the back of a long search.

Mitchell has worked in the English top flight previously, with Southampton where he was key to the signings of Nathanial Clyne and Steven Davis, as well as Tottenham Hotspur during which he continued to earn plaudits for his recruitment of the likes of Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Kieran Trippier.

It remains to be seen whether Mitchell’s potential arrival on Merseyside provides the impetus to Liverpool’s long-standing plans of signing the sought after Borussia Dortmund talent Jude Bellingham who is all but certain to spark off a transfer battle in the summer.
