Jurgen Klopp’s men got off the best start possible with the high-flying Mohamed Salah wiggling past the Atletico backline to strike an effort which took a touch off his teammate James Milner and found the back of the net.
With an early lead in the bag, Liverpool geared up on the attacking front with the hosts unable to cope up with the intensity and their defensive frailties allowed Naby Keita to unleash a wonder of a volley to make it 2-0 for the Reds.
It was then when things started to go haywire for the visitors with Diego Simeone’s side bouncing back from a corner-kick as Griezmann’s touch halved the deficit for the hosts.
Alisson Becker made a crucial stop to deny Thomas Lemar but Atletico had it in themselves to find the leveller through Griezmann who eased past Virgil van Dijk and slotted his finish to make sure both sides went into the break on equal footing.
The Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson was called into action early on in the second half with a save from Carrasco’s effort crucial to Liverpool who got a major boost when Atletico’s man in form Griezmann was given the marching orders by the referee.
