Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has revealed a fan’s request to join Liverpool during his preparations for the World Cup in Qatar with the Dutch national team.
The former Ajax star was heavily linked with a move away from Camp Nou last summer with Barca open to parting ways with the player to ease their financial concerns as some of the Premier League bigwigs registered an interest in his services.
De Jong, however, chose not to make the move to England with the Holland international opting to stay put with the Catalan outfit where he has failed to make much of an impact so far this season.
He is tipped to be a key player for his country during the upcoming World Cup in Qatar where the Netherlands will be eyeing their first-ever title on the big stage under the charge of Louis van Gaal.
Speaking to Dutch outlet AD.NL ( via The Liverpool Echo), De Jong spoke about his meeting with the migrant workers in Qatar with one worker suggesting him to sign for the Anfield giants.
“It was special for them (migrant workers), but also for us.
“A lot of people came and there was no time to have a personal conversation. One guy told me I had to join Liverpool! We loved doing this, but now the focus goes to Senegal.”
