Bayern Munich boss bids farewell to star player departing for Liverpool

Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick voiced his emotions over letting Thiago Alcantara depart for Liverpool FC ahead of the club’s 2020-21 Bundesliga season which gets underway this weekend against Schalke.

The 29-year old Spanish playmaker is on the verge of being unveiled as Jurgen Klopp’s latest signing for the Merseyside outfit after Bayern accepted a £27 million worth offer from the Premier League champions. Thiago will now agree upon personal terms with Liverpool FC and is expected to pen a four-year deal.

Flick, who led the Bavarians to an unprecedented yet historic treble last season, had been trying his level best to convince the star midfielder to extend his stay at the Allianz Arena beyond this summer’s transfer window, however, the German’s repeated efforts went futile.

Congratulating Liverpool FC on signing a player of Thiago’s calibre, Flick expressed his profound admiration for the ex-FC Barcelona man, labelling him as an ‘extraordinary player’ and thanked him for his service towards the Bundesliga giants.

“Thiago is an extraordinary player and was very important for us,” said the Bayern boss in his pre-match conference prior to the Schalke game.

“My coaching team and I enjoyed working with him. It was very emotional as we said goodbye. I can only congratulate Liverpool as they got a great player and especially a great person.

Thiago joins Jurgen Klopp’s side after a seven-year stint at the Allianz Arena, winning a league title in each of his seasons at the club, and tasting Champions League glory during the 2019-20 campaign, the Spaniard’s last in the Bayern colours.
