Liverpool have been overtaken by Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the race to complete the transfer of PSV’s in-demand star striker Donyell Malen, according to reports from The Daily Mail.
The Holland international forward has been a target for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer on the back of his fantastic run of form in front of the goal for PSV last season in which he scored 22 goals across his outings in domestic league action.
Dortmund, Klopp’s former outfit, too have in the fray for the 22-year-old as they seek replacements from the transfer market this summer to fill the void left by the outgoing Jadon Sancho who is set to be unveiled soon as Manchester United’s marquee signing of this window.
Malen is believed to have agreed upon personal terms with Borussia Dortmund but the Germans still need to come upon a consensus with PSV over the transfer fee to lure away their star forward ahead of the start of the next season.
Liverpool had been backed to give a tough challenge to Dortmund for snapping up Malen this summer with the Reds transfer chief Michael Edwards himself believed to be involved in talks with the player’s agent Mino Raiola over a possible deal.
