Former Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers is not convinced by the argument that an injury-depleted Liverpool FC backline weakens Jurgen Klopp’s side’s chances of putting out a solid performance this season.
Rodger’s Leicester City were handed a 3-0 loss by Liverpool FC on Sunday afternoon at Anfield, despite the hosts missing a number of first-team defensive regulars such as Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Trent Alexander Arnold.
However, Rodgers, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo, played down speculation that an injury-hit defensive core of the defending champions would damage their title-defence campaign for the ongoing top-flight season.
“Everybody spoke about Liverpool’s injuries,”said the Foxes boss.
“I don’t go with that narrative.
“I don’t see it as a depleted back line. I know they are missing Virgil van Dijk, but [Joel] Matip is a top player.
“Fabinho has played there against Chelsea and against top players.
“Andy Robertson has always played, Alisson is the number one goalkeeper and James Milner wherever he plays he does an incredible job.”
The Reds are set to miss the services of centre-back duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for quite possibly the entire 2020-21 season as the pair continue to undergo a rehabilitation programme following their respective surgeries.
However, Fabinho’s return from a month-long layoff provides a major boost to Liverpool FC’s chances of retaining the Premier League crown on the back of solid defensive showings, which were critical to last season’s success.
