Trent Alexander-Arnold cleared a shot from Solly March in the six-yard box in the opening stages of the game as the home side looked to threaten early on.

Kaoru Mitoma came close to breaking the deadlock with the Brighton winger twice shooting wide of Alisson Becker’s goal after getting the better of Arnold on the right flank.

A spot kick was awarded to the home side just before the break which was overturned through VAR with a Brighton player adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.

Brighton secured the opener a minute into the second half with Mitoma teeing up Solly March who made no mistake in slotting the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 for his side.

The hosts doubled their lead seven minutes later with March once again on the scoresheet, this time thanks to a low finish into the corner of the goal.

Liverpool’s changes off the bench, with four players – Ben Doak, Harvey Elliott, Naby Keita and Joe Gomez, being brought on with Klopp hoping for the substitution to make an impact for the two-goal deficit.

Brighton all but ensured the three points up for grabs on the south Coast when substitute Welbeck added a third goal from inside the box.
