John Aldridge has called upon the Reds to dip into the transfer market this summer to sign another striker to provide competition for the out-of-form Roberto Firmino.
An important figure in the Liverpool FC side of the 1980s, Aldridge expressed regret over his former club missing out on the transfer of Timo Werner. The German attacker signed for Chelsea despite being keen on a move to Anfield due to Liverpool FC’s inability to secure a big-money signing this summer.
“In an ideal world, the fans would have loved to have seen us get Timo Werner or someone of that ilk but it wasn’t possible.
“Freshening the squad up, even if it’s just one player, keeps everyone on their toes and adds to the competition for places.”
Firmino’s display for Jurgen Klopp’s side over the past weekend against Leeds United came under the lens of a majority of people, with the Brazilian being unable to convert goalscoring chances that came his way.
The 28-year old’s attacking contribution for the Reds has often been spoken about in the press, despite Klopp establishing himself to be the staunchest of supporters for his player’s role on the pitch notwithstanding Firmino’s lack of goals in recent times.
And Aldridge has voiced his concerns over the present run of form showcased by the Liverpool FC forward coming back to haunt the defending Premier League champions later on in the season. The ex-Ireland international believes Firmino’s recent inability to find the back of the net may improve drastically upon the arrival of an additional attacking option at Anfield.
“There’s been a lot said about Liverpool’s stance in the transfer market this summer but I can’t help but feel it might do Bobby some good if he did have someone breathing down his neck for his place so he knows he’s got to score goals.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of his and he does some great things for the front three which often goes unnoticed but if you’re a number nine, you have to score goals.
