Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has come under scrutiny after his comments made on the referee after his side’s defeat to Paris Saint Germain at the Parc Des Princes.
The Reds traveled to the French capital for their second Champions League fixture against Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain in order to try and strengthen their position in Group F. However, stunning performance from the home side ensured that the Parisians are still in with a very good chance to make it into the next round of the elite tournament.
PSG went ahead through goals from Juan Bernat and Neymar and James Milner got Liverpool back into the game just before the half-time whistle. But Thomas Tuchel’s side held onto the lead and emerged with all three points after a high-intensity game.
However, during the course of the game certain PSG players were seen rolling around on the floor when being tackled despite distinctly having any lack of injuries. The worst tackle of the game came through Marco Verratti on Joe Gomez but the midfielder was lucky to escape with just a caution. But Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp vented his frustrations after the game and took a dig at Polish match referee Szymon Marciniak.
In a post-match interview the German manager was unhappy with the behavior of the PSG players, ‘The number of interruptions in the game was just not cool. I could say 500,000 things [on play-acting] . . . but you can give yellow cards for everything. If you act as you die and the next moment you get up again, you could give a yellow card.’
Later on, Klopp went on to make accusations on how the game was not handled well by referee Szymon Marciniak, ‘The ref needs to be prepared for a game like this, and he did not look prepared.’
UEFA could punish Klopp for the statements made on the referee as they did with Gianluigi Buffon when the Italian was charged with a three-game ban in June when Real Madrid eliminated Juventus in a Champions League game. Buffon stated that the referee had “a garbage bin for a heart” after being sent off late in the fixture.
I think that Klopp should be frustrated by the embarrassing PSG players who were clearly play-acting when they went on the ground. However, making comments on the referee is also not right because the game is over, hopefully for Liverpool, Klopp does not face a suspension.
