The visitors made a dominating start to the Selhurst Park showdown and had an early lead inside the eighth minute to show for their control over the game.
Virgil van Dijk evaded his markers from an Andy Robertson corner delivery to score a thumping header past Palace goalie Vicente Guaita to open the scoring.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hit the side netting in an effort that could have well doubled Liverpool’s lead but the midfielder made amends just minutes later to make it 2-0 for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
A peach of a cross into the box by Andy Robertson was met by Chamberlain who had been left unmarked by the Palace defenders and the former found the back of the net with a driving finish.
Alisson Becker was called into action before the break with the Liverpool shot-stopper denying Michael Olise and Mateta in quick succession as the visitors remained ahead by two goals to nil.
Palace, however, was a much changed side in the second period and reaped rewards in the 55th minute as striker Edouard was set up by Mateta for an easy finish.
Klopp’s men put the game to bed in the final minutes of the contest with Diogo Jota brought down by Guaita in the box which was followed up by a lengthy VAR check that awarded Liverpool with a spot-kick.
