Danny Murphy urges Liverpool to sign a new defender amid injury crisis

A misfiring Liverpool FC side has been urged by former employee Danny Murphy to add to their injury-depleted defensive line in the January transfer window, according to reports from talkSPORT.

Jurgen Klopp’s Merseyside men have encountered a severe slump in form in recent times after having lost the first-choice centre-back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to season-ending layoffs, coupled with Joel Matip’s recurring troubles on the injury front forcing Klopp to turn to makeshift options in the heart of the backline.

With less than four days to go until the winter transfer window wraps up, Liverpool FC are yet to conclude any business even as a number of top defensive names across Europe such as Ben White and Ozan Kabak remain to be linked with a switch to the Premier League holders.

Murphy believes that it has become extremely important for the Anfield outfit to bring in reinforcements to shore up their defensive core as the ex-Red voices apprehensions over Liverpool FC’s recent frailties in their showings at the back.

“The small area of concern is the lack of transfer activity when they’re so desperately in need.

“I don’t think you should go out and buy for the sake of it. If you can’t get the ones you want in then you don’t do it.

“Defensively they’re not right, are they? That’s for sure. I know they’re not scoring, but you could see yesterday defensively they’re not right when [Joel] Matip isn’t there.

“So I hope for everybody’s sake they do something in the last few days of the window, give everyone a boost and then a decent result at Tottenham [on Thursday] can get them back on track.
