Former Liverpool FC centre-back Dejan Lovren has claimed that his absence in the first-team ranks at Anfield is duly missed following him signing for Russian outfit Zenit in the summer of 2020.
The central defender had taken the exit door out of Anfield in the aftermath of his falling down the pecking order at the Merseyside outfit, with Jurgen Klopp deciding against adding a fresh face to his side’s defensive core last summer.
Liverpool FC have been hit badly with injuries across the ongoing campaign and the sidelining of the first-choice pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to season-ending layoffs has meant that Klopp has often resorted to making his midfield options in Jordan Henderson and Fabinho fill in the injury-depleted gaps at the back.
Speaking to Russian outlet Sport Express, Lovren asserted that he maintained no regrets of leaving the Premier League holders in search of greater first-team involvement elsewhere before the Croatian international added that it was his old club which were now lamenting their decision to part ways with him.
‘No, I don’t regret [leaving]. My decision in the summer was firm – to leave Liverpool, and I do not look back.’
‘I got upset last season when I didn’t play, but now everything is different. I think Liverpool miss me more than I miss them and Jurgen Klopp knows this, because we communicate. He wrote recently: “We miss you.”
‘I spoke with Jurgen [after I left], but I will not disclose details. Jurgen said only good things and wished him luck.’
