Denmark talent Mikkel Damsgaard linked with Liverpool switch this summer

The 20-year-old Denmark international Mikkel Damsgaard is the new name that has popped up on Liverpool’s transfer radar for the summer on the back of his influential showings for his national side at the European Championships.

Damsgaard became the youngest Danish player to find the back of the net at the tournament currently underway and the playmaker’s performances have not gone unnoticed with Liverpool put on alert to his transfer situation.

Currently employed at Serie A outfit Sampdoria, Damsgaard is believed to be worth €30 million should Liverpool choose to intensify their interest in landing his signature ahead of the next season.

Liverpool are understood to be in the market for a new attacker should Jurgen Klopp lose out on both Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri this summer amid increasing interest in the fringe Anfield pairing from numerous clubs.

Speaking on the Analysing Anfield podcast, David Hughes has claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s side will be in line to keep tabs on the Sampdoria talent for the next summer or two taking into account his recent showings for both club and country.

“His goal against Russia was an absolutely beautiful goal,” said Hughes.

“He didn’t start the first group game but he’s started the last two against Russia and Belgium and he’s done really well.

“When I’ve looked at him in more depth, following that Russia game, he looks a player who could potentially tick a lot of boxes for Liverpool.

“He’s a really good age, he looks like he’s got a really high ceiling, technically he’s really good, he’s versatile, and he can play different positions across the attack.

“And if Liverpool do shift away from their 4-3-3 eventually, and be more fluid in their approach, and have more creativity from the central positions, then Damsgaard could bring that.

“I know he’s a left-sided attacker predominately, but you’ve seen him play through the middle, up top, and even when he plays on the left, he drifts in.

“Dare I say someone like Philippe Coutinho? Not in terms of the player profile but in terms of the way he plays. He’s more like a No 10 at times than a left-sided winger.

“Maybe not this summer but Damsgaard is someone to watch over the next year or two for Liverpool.”
