Diogo Jota to be assessed further ahead of Aston Villa clash

Diogo Jota will be subject to further assessment ahead of the game against Aston Villa, confirmed Jurgen Klopp in his pre-match press remarks.

Klopp’s men will take on a high-flying Aston Villa side who are now under the charge of Anfield icon Steven Gerrard with Liverpool strong favourites to claim the win from the weekend outing.

The Liverpool manager revealed in his pre-match remarks that Jota had picked up a knock in the last league outing against Wolves which sidelined him for the win over AC Milan at San Siro earlier this week.

“Diogo felt something after the last Premier League game and he didn’t train yet. We will see, maybe he can train today and then he is an option and if not, then not.”

Divock Origi, however, will be in the mix to feature with Klopp explaining the striker’s absence from Thursday’s team training session owing to an additional day of recovery for the Belgian.

“Divock was just intensity, we took him out for a day, extra recovery day and I think he will be fine for tomorrow. I didn’t hear anything different.”

Klopp also voiced concern over the injury trouble for central defender Nat Phillips who is set for an extended spell on the sidelines with a cheekbone fracture after injuring himself in the AC Milan game.

“Unfortunately, it is broken. It is not as bad as it could have been, so no surgery needed and he can pretty much train from next week on but reduced because everything that could hit him in the face could cause proper damage.”

“That’s why he has to be careful and make sure in the moment when he is allowed [to train fully], when the bone has healed, he will be in a good physical shape, so that’s great.

“How long it will take exactly, I don’t know. Four or five weeks, something like that. We will see.”
