Dortmund Wanted Klopp Re-Union Last Summer

The latest reports have claimed that Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans Joachim Watzke had asked Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to return to the Westfalenstadion in the summer of 2018 following the Champions League final loss against Real Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp has transformed Liverpool into a formidable unit over the past few seasons and the 52-year-old has managed to bring the glory days back to Anfield after winning the Champions League in the summer as well as finishing last season with the most points ever accumulated in the Premier League by the Merseyside outfit. The Liverpool faithful sure are extremely glad about the service that Klopp is currently providing including the football as well as the overall atmosphere in Liverpool and with his contract until the summer of 2022, there could be some more silverware in store.

However, things weren’t smooth sailing a few seasons ago when Liverpool was on a run of three losing finals in a row, the League Cup, Europa League, and the Champions League as well. But it was clear that Klopp was on the path to bringing Liverpool back to the summit and rightly so as the Reds currently sit eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Klopp won two Bundesliga titles during his time managing Dortmund during management and surely the members that are associated with the club were keen on bringing him back in 2018 when they were looking for a new manager to take the reigns.

Watze confirmed in his newly published book that he had called up Klopp even though he wasn’t completely sure that the German would not return, but he needed to be absolutely certain, “I knew that Jurgen would say no, that he would fulfill his contract in Liverpool. Jurgen has always fulfilled his contracts, but if you want to go new ways then at least I had to ask Jurgen if he could possibly imagine that. I did not expect that at all, but I would not have forgiven myself for not asking him at that moment. The most important thing in our relationship was and is that we can rely on each other blindly. Jurgen never lied to me, and I never lied to him”

Klopp’s response was one for the ages as he replied by jokingly asking if Watze was drunk at the time. Dortmund then decided to hire Swiss manager Lucian Favre in the summer as they finished as runners up in the Bundesliga.
