Liverpool played out a goalless draw against city rivals Everton in the weekend’s Merseyside derby with both sides struggling to break the deadlock over the course of the 90 minutes.

Either side enjoyed chances going forward with Liverpool frontman Darwin Nunez, back in the XI after a three-game suspension, missing from close range after Alexander-Arnold put in the delivery.

Everton midfielder Davies hit the woodwork with his effort while on the other end of the pitch, Nunez volleyed goalwards with Pickford tipping the attempt onto the crossbar with Diaz curling a shot off the post just seconds later.

Nunez went close twice in the opening stages of the second period as the Everton goalie Pickford stood his ground to keep his side in the reckoning.

Roberto Firmino, who was brought on at half time in place of Fabio Carvalho, was twice denied by Pickford with the latter also keeping out an effort from Fabinho.

The home side thought they had broken the deadlock for the opening goal in the 69th minute when Coady headed home but a lenghty VAR check followed which disallowed the strike.

Alisson was called into action to deny Everton’s Dwight McNeil while Mo Salah nearly got his side the three points with the Egyptian winger’s strike in the final seconds of the game coming back off the inside of the post.
