Former Liverpool FC man Michael Owen has aimed shots at the reluctance shown by the Merseyside club’s owners of extending a helping hand to Jurgen Klopp to solve the ongoing injury crisis at Anfield by bringing in fresh faces this January window.
Klopp had earlier claimed that the decision to sign a new central defender for the first-team plans at Liverpool FC did not rest in his hands and the German added that the Premier League holders could see out the ongoing transfer window without making any changes to their current squad.
Owen, however, believes that the Liverpool FC owners have got to back Klopp amid the severe injury crisis underway at Anfield, with the first-choice centre-back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez expected not to feature in the remainder of the top-flight campaign.
According to reports from the Daily Mail, the ex-England international said in the aftermath of Liverpool FC’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth-round meeting at Old Trafford that the club has to be run in an appropriate manner by those holding the decision making power over the transfer market policy.
‘He decided against it in the game at Anfield, he obviously played with his midfield pairing at the back.
‘He’s gone with the youngster Williams this time. I think he made it abundantly clear in his interviews this week that he would like a centre-half.
‘But the people that hold the purse strings, it’s their decision and you’ve got to run the club properly.
‘If the money is not there, the money is not there.
‘Hopefully, fingers crossed for Liverpool, a few of the injuries are going to start coming back in the coming months.’
