Gini Wijnaldum is set to put speculation suggesting his impending move to FC Barcelona this summer to rest by penning a new long-term deal with the Reds.
The 29-year old had been heavily tipped to sign for the La Liga giants ahead of the 2020-21 season after his former Dutch national team coach Ronald Koeman taking up the manager hot seat at the Camp Nou outfit.
Moreover, Wijnaldum’s current deal with Liverpool FC was due to expire next summer. This caused further rumour-mongering of the Holland international seeking an exit from Anfield before the ongoing transfer window closed down in the initial week of next month.
Jurgen Klopp had been evasive upon being asked questions over Wijnaldum’s future in the Reds shirt beyond this summer, with the German asserting that the player would stay put at the club despite being a major target for Koeman and FC Barcelona.
Such was Klopp’s faith in his player extending his four-year-long tenure at Anfield that Wijnaldum started Liverpool FC’s opening fixture of the 2020-21 Premier League season that got underway last weekend against Leeds United.
