Following Joe Gomez sustaining a potential season-long ACL injury whilst on international duty with the England squad, FIFA has reportedly agreed to shell out £2 million in compensation to Liverpool FC in order to cover the centre-back’s club wages, claims the Daily Mail.
The Reds look certain to miss their 23-year-old star central defender for the possibility of the remainder of the ongoing 2020-21 season after earlier reports confirmed that despite Gomez having undergone successful surgery on his injured knee, the player will have to go through a rehabilitation programme under the advisement of the club’s medical staff.
And now, reports have shed light on the fact that all England players are covered by FIFA’s club protection programme, one which allows football clubs to claim insurance over their employees suffering injuries while on international duty.
And taking into account the£80,000-a-week wages being pocketed by Gomez at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s side will be entitled to an amount worth £2 million from FIFA.
It is feared that the English international could miss the entire fledging campaign of the Merseyside giants, which might tempt Klopp to dip into the transfer market in January to bring in additional reinforcements for his side’s defensive core.
