Recent reports state that newly-appointed FC Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has urged Liverpool FC star Gini Wijnaldum not to extend his current deal with the Premier League champions ahead of a possible move to the Spanish giants’ next summer
Wijnaldum’s Liverpool FC contract is set to expire at the end of the upcoming 2020-21 season. The Dutch international has so far not attempted to extend his stay at the Anfield outfit.
Talks between the Merseyside club and Wijnaldum’s representatives are rumored to be in motion with Jurgen Klopp’s side keen on offering a new four-year deal to the former Newcastle United man.
However, Koeman’s recent confirmation as the manager of FC Barcelona could be a major factor behind Wijnaldum not wanting to sign a new Liverpool FC deal. The 29-year old midfielder may be open to the idea of sealing a move to Camp Nou upon his contract’s expiry next summer. The Spanish giants would be able to sign the Reds first-team starter on a free transfer in such a case.
The player had worked with Koeman at the Dutch national team setup for a period of more than two years. It is believed that Wijnaldum will be keen on signing for Koeman’s new side and linking up with his national teammate Frenkie de Jong at Camp Nou.
With Liverpool FC’s concrete interest in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara in this summer’s transfer window, Wijnaldum’s future in the Reds shirt looks highly uncertain.
