Gini Wijnaldum reflected upon the Merseyside derby loss handed to Liverpool FC by Everton on Saturday evening as an indication of the under-fire Reds resorting to hard work to turn their recent run of unfortunate happenings.
Jurgen Klopp’s outfit suffered their fourth successive loss in top-flight football following the Toffees walking away from Anfield with a 2-0 victory, a first on the famed Anfield venue for the Merseyside Blues since 1999.
Liverpool FC were largely on the backfoot over the course of the 90 minutes at their own patch and despite creating a number of good chances on the attacking end of the pitch, were unable to break down a resilient Everton backline.
Speaking to reporters in the aftermath of the match, Wijnaldum insisted that the Reds cannot afford to be affected adversely by the changing tide of events for the worst as a defeat in the derby was coupled with yet another injury setback to a key first-teamer in the Anfield ranks in the form of skipper Jordan Henderson.
“You don’t want to feel sorry for yourself and don’t want to go into the victim role,” said the Holland international, as quoted by Liverpool FC’s official website.
“You just want to deal with the situation and try to bring it to a better end, or a good end, even if you know that you have a lot of injuries.
“I think that’s how we should look at the situation, not be the victims but just try to turn it around. We have a lot of games to turn it around – if we’re going to look at the situation as victims it’s going to be worse.
“What we can do is just try to give everything, try to keep confident and work all together to bring it [the season] to a better end.”
Saturday’s win at their rival’s ground took the Toffees level on points with Jurgen Klopp’s men in spite of having played a game less than the defending champions.
