Speculation concerning Gini Wijnaldum’s contractual negotiations with Liverpool FC continues to drag on with his current deal expiring next season. The Merseyside club have still not been able to convince the Dutch international on extending his stay at Anfield.
The 29-year old Wijnaldum is one among the very few stars of the Reds’ Premier League title-winning squad who are yet to put pen to paper on a long-term deal. On the other hand, several of the midfielder’s teammates such as Virgil van Dijk and Mohammad Salah have been tied down to Liverpool FC for the foreseeable future.
Wijnaldum has been a very important part of Jurgen Klopp’s side over the past three seasons. He appeared in as many as 36 of Liverpool FC’s fixtures across their 2019-20 Premier League campaign. The Dutch midfielder’s ability to balance his attacking and defensive responsibilities is of major significance to Klopp’ set up at the Merseyside club.
With Liverpool FC rumoured to be in pole position to land Thiago Alcântara’s signing this summer, a certain level of doubt looms over Wijnaldum’s future in the Reds shirt. Many sources close to the club feel that the 29-year old may be allowed to depart in order to accommodate the arrival of the Bayern Munich creative force.
However, alternate reports have contradicted such a claim of Wijnaldum being surplus to requirements at Anfield. The ex-Newcastle man is still considered an integral force at the centre of the park for the Reds. Moreover, Jurgen Klopp would not want to lose out on his star midfielder for free come next summer.
