Gini Wijnaldum’s salary demands reportedly behind contract stall

As speculation surrounds Gini Wijnaldum’s stay at Anfield beyond next summer, with the likes of FC Barcelona and Inter Milan understood to be wanting to make a move for the Dutchman, reports from the Daily Mail claim that Wijnaldum remains keen on staying put at the Merseyside outfit.

However, the 29-year-old is seeking a massive wage bump to reflect his growing role in the first-team fold of Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League title-winning squad.

Reports suggest that the Holland international midfielder is convinced of signing new terms with the Anfield giants, but is looking to be offered a much-improved deal than the one he signed four summers ago following his move to Liverpool FC from Newcastle United.

Jurgen Klopp is also understood to be eager on managing to secure Wijnaldum’s extension in the Reds shirt rather than dip into the transfer market for a direct replacement, despite the name of Renato Sanches being linked with a move to the Merseysiders.

With the January transfer window looming at large for football clubs, Liverpool FC would be quick in their attempts to iron out a new deal with Wijnaldum, largely due to fears of their first-team regular opening talks with other interested clubs.
