How Liverpool Lined-Up for the 2021-2022 Premier League Campaign [All 38 Matches]

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side enjoyed a superb league campaign this season but had to be content with a second-place finish following a dramatic turn of events on the final day.

Manchester City’s turnaround in a 3-2 win over Aston Villa meant that Liverpool’s own comeback against Wolves was not enough for them to be crowned the champions of England and complete the domestic treble.

Match 1 – Norwich City v Liverpool (0-3) – 14 August 2021

Liverpool picked up the three points in a convincing manner on opening day against Norwich City with goals from attacking trio Jota, Firmino and Salah.

It was an all-around comprehensive showing from Jurgen Klopp’s side away from home turf.

Match 2 – Liverpool v Burnley (2-0) – 21 August 2021

In the first Anfield outing of the Premier League season for the Reds, they posted a 2-0 win over Burnley courtesy of goals from Jota and Sadio Mane.

The likes of Kostas Tsimikas and Harvey Elliott were named on the team sheet with the former providing cover for the injured Andy Robertson for the second game in a row.

Match 3 – Liverpool v Chelsea (1-1) – 28 August 2021

Andy Robertson’s return to the XI was of much importance to the hosts Liverpool when taking on top-four rivals Chelsea at Anfield.

Klopp’s men, however, had to share the spoils with the Blues in a 1-1 stalemate.

Match 4 – Leeds United v Liverpool (0-3) – 12 September 2021

Diogo Jota earned a recall into the first XI for Liverpool while Klopp retained his faith in the young starlet Harvey Elliott who had to be stretchered off the pitch with a gruesome injury.

Goals from Fabinho, Salah and Mane’s stoppage-time strike earned Liverpool a 3-0 win at Elland Road.

Match 5 – Liverpool v Crystal Palace (3-0) – 14 September 2021

Liverpool maintained their rich vein of form heading into the game against Crystal Palace with goals from Mane, Salah and Keita securing the three points up for grabs at Anfield.

Match 6 – Brentford v Liverpool (3-3) – 25 September 2021

Curtis Jones was a surprise inclusion in the XI for Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp handing some well-earned rest to Thiago Alcantara.

The game against the league’s new boys Brentford, however, finished in a 3-3 draw with late goals from the home side proving a setback for Liverpool.

Match 7 – Liverpool v Manchester City (2-2) – 3 October 2021

The game against the defending champions was of much importance to Liverpool who were without Trent Alexander-Arnold in the right-back role due to an injury with Milner providing cover.

Klopp’s men could not stage a return to winning ways with a 2-2 draw on the cards thanks to Salah’s late strike.

Match 8 – Watford v Liverpool (0-5) – 16 October 2021

Liverpool put up their very best against the Premier League new boys Watford in a thumping win at Vicarage Road as Klopp welcomed back the likes of Firmino and Arnold to the team sheet.

A hat-trick from the returning Firmino powered Liverpool through to a 5-0 scoreline.

Match 9 – Manchester United v Liverpool (0-5) – 24 October 2021

One of the best outings from Jordan Henderson and Co. this season was witnessed in the drubbing of arch rivals Manchester United on away territory.

Mohamed Salah’s hat-trick was key to the Reds picking up a memorable win over Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s side.

Match 10 – Liverpool v Brighton (2-2) – 30 October 2021

Sadio Mane came back into the XI for the Anfield showdown against Brighton and got on the scoresheet too after Jordan Henderson found the opener in the early minutes.

A valiant comeback from Brighton, however, meant that Klopp’s men had to settle for a point apiece.

Match 11 – West Ham United v Liverpool (3-2) – 7 November 2021

Diogo Jota was recalled and Fabinho returned from his injury with Liverpool making the travels to the English capital to face West Ham.

The Merseysiders suffered their first defeat of the season with West Ham picking up a narrow 3-2 win.

Match 12 – Liverpool v Arsenal (4-0) – 20 November 2021

Liverpool marked a return to winning ways, that too in style, with a solid showing on all fronts helping them secure a 4-0 win over the visitors Arsenal.

Goals from attacking trio Mane, Salah and Jota set up the show while substitute Minamino also got in on the action.

Match 13 – Liverpool v Southampton (4-0) – 27 November 2021

Another big win was on the cards for Klopp’s men who put four goals past a toothless Southampton outfit with Diogo Jota bagging a brace.

Thiago and Van Dijk were the other scorers for the Reds.

Match 14 – Everton v Liverpool (1-4) – 1 December 2021

Joel Matip’s inclusion into the starting XI was the sole change rung in by Klopp for the first Merseyside derby of the season.

It was a 4-1 win for Liverpool with Mohamed Salah’s brace coupled with strikes each from Henderson and Jota.

Match 15 – Wolves v Liverpool (0-1) – 4 December 2021

An unchanged XI took the field for Liverpool on the road to Wolves as Jurgen Klopp had to rely upon his super-sub Divock Origi to claim the win for the Reds.

Origi’s stoppage time effort proved the first and only goal of the game to hand Liverpool the three points.

Match 16 – Liverpool v Aston Villa (1-0) – 11 December 2021

Diogo Jota dropped out of the XI with Klopp handing a starting berth to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who slotted in the attacking lineup.

Mohamed Salah’s 67th minute penalty proved to be the difference maker in the Anfield contest for Liverpool.

Match 17 – Liverpool v Newcastle United (3-1) – 17 December 2021

Chamberlain retained his berth on the team sheet but was slotted this time around in the midfield ranks with Diogo Jota returning to the forward trio.

Jonjo Shelvey gave Newcastle the lead but Liverpool staged a win with goals from Jota, Salah and a late strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Match 18 – Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool (2-2) – 19 December 2021

Injuries to Fabinho and Jordan Henderson forced Klopp to ring in big changes to the midfield department with the teenager Taylor Morton included alongside James Milner and Naby Keita.

Liverpool were held to a 2-2 stalemate by the North Londoners Spurs.

Match 19 – Leicester City v Liverpool (1-0) – 28 December 2021

Another disappointing showing was seen from Liverpool against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium despite regulars Fabinho and Henderson returning to the XI.

Lookman’s goal around the hour mark gave his side the three points with Liverpool tasting their second defeat of the Premir League campaign.

Match 20 – Chelsea v Liverpool (2-2) – 2 January 2022

The winless run now stretched to three games with Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea and Liverpool involved in an evenly contested affair at Stamford Bridge which finished 2-2.

Match 21 – Liverpool v Brentford (3-0) – 16 January 2022

Liverpool got back to their brilliant best as they emerged convincing winners against Thomas Farke’s Brentford outfit on home turf.

Goals from Fabinho, Chamberlain and Minamino ensured the three points for the Reds.

Match 22 – Crystal Palace v Liverpool (1-3) – 23 January 2022

An unchanged XI for Liverpool did the trick for Jurgen Klopp with a 3-1 win away at Crystal Palace who looked to mount a serious challenge but were stopped in their tracks.

Match 23 – Liverpool v Leicester City (2-0) – 10 February 2022

Klopp’s latest recruit from the Janaury window, Luis Diaz, was handed the starting berth up front with no Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane in the XI.

A brace from Diogo Jota, however, was all that was needed for Liverpool to clinch the win over Leicester City.

Match 24 – Burnley v Liverpool (0-1) – 13 February 2022

Both Salah and Mane earned recalls back to the XI with Jota and Diaz dropping out as Naby Keita too was handed a stating role for the game against Burnley.

Fabinho’s strike just before the half time break proved to be the only goal of the game to win it for Liverpool.

Match 25 – Liverpool v Norwich City (3-1) – 19 February 2022

Liverpool were handed a blow and a shocking one when relegation favourites Norwich City took the lead at Anfield through Rashica.

A strong second half showing from the home side with goals from Mane, Salah and Diaz steered them back on course to claim the victory.

Match 26 – Liverpool v Leeds United (6-0) – 23 February 2022

Liverpool ran riot against Leeds United at Anfield with braces each from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane powering the hosts to a 6-0 scoreline.

Match 27 – Liverpool v West Ham United (1-0) – 5 March 2022

Luis Diaz retained his starting berth after his stellar start to life in the Premier League with Liverpool who had Ibrahima Konate replacing Joel Matip in the heart of the defence.

Sadio Mane’s 27th minute strike was the decisive moment to clinch the win for the home side.

Match 28 – Brighton v Liverpool (0-2) – 12 March 2022

Matip came back into the XI for Liverpool, replacing Konate, for the game against Brighton with Klopp’s men securing a 2-o win thanks to goals from Diaz and Salah.

Match 29 – Arsenal v Liverpool (0-2) – 16 March 2022

Thiago Alcantara came back into the Liverpool XI at the expense of Naby Keita for the game against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Goals from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino, the latter coming off the bench in the second period, secured the three points.

Match 30 – Liverpool v Watford (2-0) – 2 April 2022

Luis Diaz dropped out of the XI to give way for the Brazil international Roberto Firmino while Joe Gomez was handed a rare start in the right-back role.

Goals from Jota and Fabinho ensured the win for Liverpool against basement side Watford.

Match 31 – Manchester City v Liverpool (2-2) – 10 April 2022

Jurgen Klopp fielded his strongest XI out on the Etihad turf for the top of the table clash against Manchester City with Arnold and Henderson earning recalls.

After City took the lead twice in the first half, Sadio Mane scored early in the second period to salvage a point for his team.

Match 32 – Liverpool v Manchester United (4-0) – 19 April 2022

Luis Diaz replaced Diogo Jota in the XI and the former made an instant impact in the derby clash with a goal to his name in the opening minutes.

Salah bagged a brace and Mane scored too as Liverpool ran out 4-0 winners over arch rivals Manchester United.

Match 33 – Liverpool v Everton (2-0) – 24 April 2022

Another derby, another win for Jurgen Klopp’s Merseysiders ! Andy Robertson and Divock Origi bagged the goals in the later stages of the game to steer their team to a win.

Match 34 – Newcastle United v Liverpool (0-1) – 30 April 2022

With Klopp ringing in major changes to his XI for the tip to St. James’ Park, it was a narrow win for Liverpool who scored through Naby Keita in the 19th minute to grab the three points.

Match 35 – Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur (1-1) – 7 May 2022

Perhaps the turning point of the season for the Reds who were hoping to pip Manchester City to the top spot in the standings with Spurs holding Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Match 36 – Aston Villa v Liverpool (1-2) – 10 May 2022

Aston Villa delivered an early blow to Liverpool as they took a 3rd minute lead through Douglaz Luiz but Liverpool responded in style to stage a win from behind.

Goals from Joel Matip and Sadio Mane were of much importance to the visitors to Villa Park.

Match 37 – Southampton v Liverpool (1-2) – 17 May 2022

The penultimate outing of the league season saw Liverpool stage another comeback, this time against Southampton, with a much-changed XI on show for the visitors.

Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip were the scorers for Liverpool who had gone behind in the opening stages.

Match 38 – Liverpool v Wolves (3-1) – 22 May 2022

Wolves got an early lead through Pedro Neto as Liverpool relied upon Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson to stage yet another win after conceding first.

However, the result could not swing the Premier League fortunes back in Liverpool’s favor with City’s win over Aston Villa defending their crown.
