Jamie Carragher admits Liverpool midfield underperformed in Spurs draw

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher admitted that Liverpool’s midfield underperformed in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were held to a stalemate in the English capital away at Spurs who took advantage of the visitors being reduced to 10 men late on in the game to seal a point from the result.

The Liverpool gaffer Klopp had been bereft of quality options to field in his starting XI’s midfield with both Thiago Alcantara and the skipper Jordan Henderson sidelined for the weekend game as the former tested positive for COVID-19.

Klopp was forced to hand a role on the team sheet to the teeange midfield talent Tyler Morton who was in for a difficult evening with the 19-year-old going up against the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Carragher while speaking to Sky Sports for the post-game analysis claimed Morton was ‘left on his own too often’ in the heart of the midfield as the former Liverpool man lamented an underwhelming showing from the players.

“I think they will be disappointed that they went 2-1 up but Tottenham should’ve won the game.”

“You look at the XG, the big chances they had it could’ve gone either way but the chances Liverpool gave up, Liverpool had a big problem in midfield. Maybe understandable, completely different midfield to what we saw in midweek and I felt at times Tyler Morton, I felt for him a little bit.”

“I thought he looked a little bit exposed, left on his own, at times and Liverpool the way they played today was almost two centre-backs and Tyler Morton trying to control Kane and Son and then midfield runners and that’s where the chances came from.”

“I thought the midfield was the big problem and they didn’t give help to that young lad, he was left on his own too often.”
