Anfield hero Jamie Carragher has slammed Jurgen Klopp for downplaying the importance of cup competitions at Liverpool in recent years.
The former Liverpool central defender reckons his old club could have added more trophies to their cabinet under Klopp’s management given their style of play which has earned them rave reviews but failed a sizable return of silverware.
In his column for The Telegraph, the Sky Sports pundit claims that Liverpool should emulate Chelsea who have achieved much success during the ownership stint of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich and have become ‘serial trophy collectors’.
‘His team have not won enough.
‘Out of context, that sounds extremely unfair. A better way of putting it is that they have not won as much as their performances have deserved.
‘To put it simply, Liverpool need to become more like Chelsea.
‘What they have done so well during the Roman Abramovich era is to become serial trophy collectors. That is an area where Liverpool can and must improve.’
Klopp’s men are set to go up against Chelsea next in Premier League action over the weekend in a must-win game for either side to keep the pace up with the league leaders Manchester City and renew the faltering title hopes.
A defeat away at Leicester City last time around for Liverpool have left them nine points adrift of the table-toppers City who have played one more game than their Merseyside counterparts.
