Anfield icon Jamie Carragher is unconvinced by Liverpool’s depth in the attacking roles after a timid flow of business in the transfer window for the Reds this summer.
Jurgen Klopp made only one new signing in the summer window which came in the form of the young French central defender Ibrahima Konate whose arrival gives the Liverpool boss another notable option at the back.
The German did not pursue a fresh face for his midfield or attacking departments despite the exits of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri, two players who had been first-teamers on Merseyside since the last couple of campaigns.
Club great Carragher has voiced his concerns over the same with the player-turned-pundit, as quoted by reports from Goal, claiming that the loss of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in January to the Africa Cup of Nations fixture list could make things difficult for Liverpool on the squad selection front.
The likes of Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino, both of whom were retained by Klopp beyond this summer, are not go-to replacements on the starting teamsheet for Salah and Mane, according to Carragher.
“I’m disappointed Liverpool haven’t got an attacker in, I must say.
“I do think Liverpool are short in the attack and they will have to keep everybody fit, which is nigh on impossible really. I do think they will struggle but they’re very robust, Liverpool’s front three.
“Mane and maybe Salah away for the Africa Cup of Nations at some stage, I’m not sure how many games they’ll miss but I do think that was something to miss for Liverpool.
“They’ve got Origi there and Minamino but I basically wanted someone who was better than them to come into the club.
“[Diogo] Jota is there as well and he was a big miss for Liverpool last season, he missed about four months with a knee injury.
“You know whether it’s the owners, if it’s something to do with the pandemic, finances are tight and you know with no-one going out, we couldn’t bring anyone in.”
