According to the latest reports, Liverpool defender Joel Matip will be out of action for the Reds for another six weeks after suffering a fractured collarbone in the win against Napoli on Tuesday.
Liverpool fans were delighted after their team managed to hold onto a 1-0 win over Serie A outfit Napoli on Tuesday night at Anfield. The Merseyside club also sits at the summit of the Premier League table and is yet to be beaten in England’s top flight division. But along with the win over Napoli, there was a dark cloud over the injury concerns for defender Joel Matip who went down in the final few minutes of the game.
Matip was rushed to the hospital immediately after the game and scans suggested that the 27-year-old center-back suffered a broken collarbone and will have to go through surgery which will keep him out of footballing action for at least six weeks. Matip was enjoying a few games of first-team football as Englishman Joe Gomez suffered an injury during the Burnley game and the 21-year-old defender is also set to miss out on playing for the rest of the year.
With Manchester United visiting Anfield on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp has a few defensive worries to sort out as even young right back Trent Alexander Arnold will miss the crunch clash. This leaves Liverpool with only two fit and senior center backs in the form of Virgil Van Dijk and Dejan Lovren.
The Reds will also host Arsenal and travel to the City of Manchester to face the champions in the busy festive weeks to come. The loss of Matip and Gomez means that Klopp cannot afford to lose any more defenders as it could seriously dent Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Premier League title or further qualification in the Champions League.
