Liverpool FC centre-half Joel Matip has been confirmed sidelined for the remainder of the 2020-21 season due to the ankle injury sustained by the 29-year-old in last week’s win over Tottenham Hotspurs.
Reports from the club’s official website state that Matip’s ankle ligament injury rules out the Cameroonian central defender from featuring again this season as he joins fellow central defenders Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the recovery table at Anfield.
Matip has been the subject of a number of recurring issues on the injury front since the turn of the season but the latest setback is one which Jurgen Klopp confirmed to be a major one, with the Liverpool FC boss claiming that further assessment of the defender’s ankle had revealed the extent of the problem.
“Unfortunately, we found out now after everybody looked at it that Joel will be out for the rest of the season.
“But he will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally everything will be sorted.”
“But he injured his ankle and played the game on and now is out for the season, so you can imagine how much he tried to stay on the pitch and tried to help us.
“We will wait for him. He has now the rest of this season, then the summer, then the pre-season to get ready again and he will be ready again.”
A severe injury crisis for the Premier League holders had forced Klopp’s hand in using the transfer window in its final hours on deadline day to bring in fresh faces on Merseyside as the Anfield outfit completed deals for Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in quick succession.
