Joel Matip is expected to return to the first-team fold at Anfield over the coming week, according to Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp.
The 29-year-old central defender was missing in action on Sunday for the goalless stalemate at Anfield, with Matip being absent for his fourth consecutive outing for Klopp’s men due to a previously sustained adductor injury.
Jordan Henderson had slotted into the heart of the backline once again for the top-of-the-table clash against Manchester United over the weekend and the Reds skipper put in a tremendous shift in defence for the Premier League holders.
Speaking to the club’s official website in the aftermath of the game, Klopp said Matip would be in line for selection as Liverpool FC next face Burnley in top-flight action before visiting Old Trafford to square off against Manchester United in the FA Cup.
“He will be in the mix, but I don’t know,” said the German.
“I’m pretty sure he trained today, another tough session, [that] means [he] will be from tomorrow on with us. Probably yes, we don’t know.”
Matip’s prolonged absence in the Liverpool FC colours has forced Klopp’s hand in drafting his central midfield options of Fabinho and Henderson into the defence, ensuring a loud cry from the club’s supporters for additional reinforcements this January window.
