A late call will be made upon fielding Joel Matip on Wednesday as Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspurs visit Anfield for the Premier League meeting between the two table-toppers.
Matip was withdrawn off the pitch at Craven Cottage on Sunday during Liverpool FC’s 1-1 draw against Fulham as the 29-year-old central defender could not carry on for the closing 45 minutes owing to a back spasm.
In his pre-match interview ahead of the Spurs clash, Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp remained optimistic on Matip’s return to the XI for the mid-week league game but was hesitant to confirm his sole senior centre-back’s involvement in the Anfield showdown against the North London giants.
“I don’t know yet. Only two days ago we played, he left the pitch with a back spasm.
“The physios worked pretty much 24 hours on him, so we will see. Today we have another session and then we will see.”
Matip is the only natural option available at Klopp’s disposal in the centre-back role following long-term injury layoffs for both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk, hence Liverpool FC supporters are worrying over the Cameroonian’s status as the Tottenham Hotspurs frontline looks all set to cause trouble at Anfield.
Fabinho should be seen partnering Matip at the heart of the defence if the latter does work his way to full fitness leading up to the game against Spurs.
