Liverpool FC remain in urgent need of additional defensive reinforcements this January transfer window as makeshift centre half options would fail to do the trick for the Premier League holders, admitted ex-Liverpool FC man John Barnes.
The drafting of both Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in the heart of the Reds backline has disrupted the balance of play in the centre of the park, belives Barnes, following the Liverpool FC skipper Henderson slotting in at centre-back alongside Fabinho during the 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Monday.
A major dip in form for the Merseysiders has largely been attributed to the growing number of injury casualties in the defensive department of Jurgen Klopp’s side, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez tipped to be season-ending layoffs for the Anfield outfit.
Joel Matip, who had been Klopp’s sole fully fit option in central defence after the Van Dijk-Gomez blow to the Reds, has been on the recieving end of recurring injury issues, prompting many to urge Klopp to use the ongoing tranfer window to add fresh faces at the club.
‘Long-term, Liverpool need better quality in defensive areas,’ said Barnes, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
‘They also need Jordan Henderson playing in midfield.
‘Liverpool need a stop-gap defender – they’re probably not going to get the best centre back in the world in January as that is not always the best time to buy and the best players are in the Champions League for their clubs.
