Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has hailed Virgil van Dijk as an “unbelievable player”, and admitted opened up on the defender’s “huge impact” at the Premier League club since his move from south coast Southampton in January 2018.
The Merseyside giants spent a club-record fee of £75 million to lure Van Dijk to Anfield from the Saints, and he has since justified that price tag by establishing himself as one of the best centre-backs at Liverpool and also one of the best defenders in the world.
Jurgen Klopp’s unit tasted success in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA World Club Cup last year with Van Dijk at the heart of the Liverpool defence. This season, the 28-year-old centre back has become an absolute colossus at Anfield helping Liverpool to the summit of the Premier League table.
Since arriving at Liverpool at the start of 2018, Van Dijk has already notched up 113 appearances and won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award.
Van Dijk also finished in second place on the list of the Ballon d’Or only behind Barcelona talisman and captain Lionel Messi.
With Liverpool now on course to win their first top-flight title in 3 decades, club captain Jordan Henderson has credited Van Dijk for providing the “big boost” the Premier League giants needed to resume challenging for major honours.
The Liverpool skipper, who was recently crowned as the Player of the Year spoke to BT Sport and explained that Van Dijk has been immense for the team over the past few years, “What hasn’t he brought, really?! I couldn’t speak highly enough of him as a player. Of course, everybody knows how good he is and what he’s done over the last couple of years for the team, he’s been immense. He’s won his individual awards and rightly so. He’s an unbelievable defender, an unbelievable player. But for me, he’s brought something huge off the pitch. I couldn’t speak highly enough of him off the pitch and the type of man and person that he is.
