Jorg Schmadtke set to sign a short-term contract to become Liverpool’s new sporting director

Jorg Schmadtke is said to be destined to sign a short-term contract to become Liverpool’s new sporting director and take over from Julian Ward who will leave come July 1.

The vastly experienced Schmadtke was earmarked as the frontrunner for the Liverpool job following an extensive search which got underway after Ward announced he would be leaving the Merseysiders last November.

According to a report from The Athletic, it is claimed that Liverpool will be announcing the appointment of Schmadtke to the sporting director role anytime soon with the former Wolfsburg man set to pen a short-term deal with his new employers.

Liverpool had considered the likes of Monaco’s Paul Mitchell and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Markus Krosche for Ward’s successor with the FSG’s Mike Gordon and the club’s CEO Billy Hogan overseeing the process.

Schmadtke will have his task cut out when he arrives at Anfield this summer when Jurgen Klopp is busy planning a rebuild of his squad after failing to secure Champions League qualification for the next season.
