Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he doesn’t even know how good star winger Xherdan Shaqiri can be for the Reds.
As if Liverpool’s attacking department was not good enough the last term, Jurgen Klopp decided to add more firepower to his frontline with the signing of Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri. With Stoke City being relegated, most of their fans knew that the highly talented winger was far too good to be playing in the Championship.
The Merseyside club decided to trigger Shaqiri’s £13 million release clause from his contract in July and has already impressed with his displays over Huddersfield Town and Red Star Belgrade notching up some key assists during the course of eight appearances this term.
And having been deemed one of the most logical signings of the season, Liverpool manager has opened up on how he doesn’t even know the whole ability that the 27-year-old Shaqiri possesses.
The German manager was asked about Shaqiri’s quality to which he replied, “I don’t think anybody has an idea at the moment how good Shaq can be. It’s not a criticism; it’s just how it is, I knew him when he was 19 at Bayern and he was already an outstanding talent. He had a good first year. The second year he wasn’t that good, but that can happen. Then he left. You can disappear a bit. Inter Milan and then Stoke. Thank God, he didn’t disappear.”
Klopp went on to add that Shaqiri is still not the finished article and there are spaces where the attacker can improve, “Signing him was a logical thing to do. He’s still not the finished article. He still has a lot of space for improvement and that’s really good. He gives us something different. So far we haven’t really used his set-pieces but they are outstanding. That’s another plus.”
Shaqiri has already shown us his quality on the pitch and he can fit in quite well for the injured Alex Oxlade Chamberlain. But he will be adding that depth in Liverpool’s squad that Klopp yearned for during last season.
