Jurgen Klopp dismisses Manchester United’s ‘underdogs’ tag ahead of Sunday’s meeting at Anfield

Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s claims of his Manchester United side being the ‘underdogs’ on their visit to Anfield over the weekend was shot down by Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp.

The German insisted that United have never been worthy of the ‘underdogs’ status since his appointment to the top job at the Merseyside outfit nearly five years ago and Solskajer’s table-topping Red Devils would come into Sunday’s Anfield showdown full of confidence.

“I have been five years in England and United was never an underdog,” said Klopp in his pre-match interview.

“They cannot be. It is just like it is.

“[They are] always a good team, always great players, always really good managers and coaches. It was always there and now they are top of the table. That is how it is.

“They cannot be underdogs, but we play at home and we don’t see ourselves as an outsider or whatever just because they are ahead of us. We have to be dominant in the games.

“Usually they change system against us. They played 10 times with four at the back and against RB Leipzig they played with five at the back, so maybe they will change that.

“Those are things we have to think about – not who is the outsider. It is Liverpool vs United and that in itself is a massive game.

“Wherever I would be in the world I would watch it definitely. This is the game!”

Liverpool FC’s misfiring run of form of late in top-flight action draws a sharp contrast to the recent upsurge witnessed in the showings by Sunday’s visitors to Anfield, with the Old Trafford giants having gone three points clear at the summit thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Burnley last time around.

Klopp’s men, meanwhile, have endured a three-game winless streak across league action and last week’s defeat to Southampton displayed certain first-team regulars in the Reds shirt being quite off their best.
