Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp spoke highly of teenage winger Harvey Elliott after he became the youngest ever player to make a competitive start for the club in the 2-0 EFL Cup win over MK Dons on Wednesday night.
At just 16 years and 174 days old Elliott impressed on his debut but he could have had an even better one through a goal as well though he missed a golden chance early on when he turned James Milner’s delivery against the crossbar.
MK Dons goalkeeper Stuart Moore made a calamitous error from Milner’s 41st-minute strike which Liverpool the lead and despite a spirited display from the home side Liverpool defender Ki-Jana Hoever’s header wrapped up the victory to ensure Liverpool progress to the next stage.
Elliott came close to scoring once again as he hit the post with a curling effort but the young English star certainly seems like a player that will become a superstar in the future.
Having arrived at Anfield only in the summer transfer window from Championship club Fulham, Elliott has already impressed his German boss. While speaking in a press conference, the 52-year-old Klopp said, “At 16 [Elliott] is the kind of footballer that’s really good for us. He is a brilliant boy, he takes the situation really well and wants to learn. He will always be a special player for moments, but you see overall with his defending and movements, it is not easy so that is really good. His left foot is not too bad. He was a bit unlucky otherwise he would have scored.”
