Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has asked for patience with new striker Darwin Nunez after the fans questioned the player’s poor run of form.
The 23-year-old has been unable to replicate his pre-season form since joining the club on an £85 million move from Benfica. The red card incident against Crystal Palace hit his form badly and he has not recovered well since then.
Although Jurgen Klopp did admit that it was the Uruguayan’s fault, the manager also supported the player and asked for patience with his star signing.
The manager also revealed that he had a long meeting with assistant manager Pep Lijnders and the young striker regarding this issue. They wanted to know the reason behind the player’s sudden drop in form.
Speaking to the press before the Reds’ group match against Rangers in the Champions League, the German manager asked for some space for his new signing.
As reported by the Daily Mail, he said:
“Of course he’s still adapting. Our players always adapt. New players come in and everybody talks about them and wants them to shine immediately. That happens from time to time and sometimes not.”
“Only yesterday, we had a long talk with Pep Lijnders, because my Spanish or Portuguese is still not better. We just told him: we are completely calm, so it’s really important in our situation that he’s not worrying. He’s not looking like he’s worried or whatever.”
Klopp understands that the three-match suspension did not help the former Benfica striker and that they need to increase his confidence.
Nunez has scored just one goal in the league and he needs to pick up form in order to win the hearts of the fans. It may take a while, but he has the capability to reach the highest level with Liverpool.
