Jurgen Klopp plays down extent of Virgil van Dijk’s facial injury

Fears concerning Virgil van Dijk’s recent injury sustained in the Reds’ pre-season friendly fixture against RB Salzburg has been dispelled by Jurgen Klopp in a recent interview.

The 29-year old commanding center-back was forced off the pitch in Liverpool FC’s second and final friendly fixture being held in Austria against RB Salzburg due to a significant cut on his head which left the defender bleeding from the wound.

However, Klopp has assured the supporters of the Anfield giants that there is nothing to be concerned about regarding the Dutch international’s injury.

“Virg only looks like he has a piercing now and has a plaster on it,” the Liverpool FC boss told the club’s official website. “It should not be, and is, no problem. In the moment it is, of course, not cool but there will not be a problem.”

Van Dijk had to be substituted in the 55th minute of the game by youngster Nathan Philips with Klopp being concerned at that time about not aggravating the center-back’s head cut. However, the German coach was at his reassuring best his side’s 2-2- draw with Salzburg.

The center-back is widely expected to start Saturday’s FA Community Shield showdown against Arsenal, despite the latest injury setback that has turned out to be a minor niggle, according to Klopp.
