Liverpool FC does not look beyond the next fixture to harbour expectations of a second successive top-flight title, according to the Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.
The Merseyside Reds opened up a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League standings on the back of their 7-0 win at Selhurst Park last weekend, and with Klopp’s men playing hosts to the struggling West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, three more points are expected to be secured quite safely in the bag.
However, while speaking to the club’s official website, the German coach insisted that his team’s focus was always on the forthcoming fixture rather than think about the title challenge as the widely-contested race heats up heading into the festive period across the country.
“Honestly, we don’t think about challenging [for] the title in the moment; honestly, not at all,” Klopp replied.
“I know it’s kind of boring but it’s the truth because we don’t understand it in a different way. We just try to make sure we are as competitive as possible in the next game.
“So, you win a game, which is great – the best feeling you can get. Then usually you play a few days later again. This time we didn’t have that, that’s true. The first time. Now we try to use that really to prepare for the next few games, probably not for the rest of the season but for the next few games.
19th-placed West Brom are highly unlikely to give the Champions of England too tough a fight at Anfield’s turf come Sunday but Klopp and Co. will surely be wary of incoming boss Sam Allardyce’s renowned tactics to chalk out a result in his side’s favour as the Englishman remains the last manager to have won an away league game at Anfield since April 2017.
