Senegalese forward Sadio Mane was forced off during Liverpool’s win at Chelsea and Jurgen Klopp has spoken about the damage for the 27-year-old after his injury.
Although it was an evening of great delight for Liverpool as they ground out a 2-1 win over West London side Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, the only silver cloud was Mane’s injury. Mane was replaced by English midfielder James Milner after N’Golo Kante got Chelsea back into the game with a mazy dribble and exquisite finish 19 minutes before the full-time whistle.
Liverpool was leading 2-0 heading into the break thanks to goals from right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Brazilian frontman Roberto Firmino but they survived a late flurry of attacks from Chelsea to earn the three points. Speaking after the game, Jurgen Klopp revealed the injury to his star forward Sadio Mane before explaining the reason why he was substituted.
The 52-year-old German told reporters that Mane suffered a double blow which consisted of a combination of a dead leg as well as blow to the knee but fortunately, Klopp said that Mane was ‘Ok”, “It was a knock on the bone, around the knee, and a dead leg. That’s an awful combination. He tried everything. I think you saw there was one counter situation when he really tried and I would say on a non-dead-leg day he will get that ball, but no chance. Then we say, ‘come on, now we have to do it’ and changed. That’s it.”
Liverpool kept their 100 percent win record in the Premier League ticking as they continue to compete against title rivals Manchester City for the Premiership.
