Joel Matip’s withdrawal off the Anfield pitch on Sunday evening against West Brom came as a massive blow to Liverpool FC’s rising issues on the injury front following Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both understood to be potential season-long absentees.
However, speaking to the press in his post-match interview, Jurgen Klopp said that a late call would be taken on Matip’s fitness ahead of the Merseyside giants visiting Newcastle United later this week for game week 16 of the Premier League season.
Matip had been forced to exit the game’s proceedings with 30 minutes still left to play for as 19-year-old Rhys Williams took the Cameroon centre-back’s spot on the pitch alongside Fabinho at the heart of the Reds backline.
“Joel told me he felt something in his adductor and that’s obviously not too good.
“I am not sure how serious it is now, but it was serious enough that he had to leave the pitch. The rest of the information I will get tomorrow.”
Jurgen Klopp’s men blew a golden chance to open up a five-point lead at the top of the league standings after an 82nd-minute equaliser from the Baggies meant that Liverpool FC’s 100% league record at Anfield this season came to an abrupt end.
